Ios is an ideal destination for summer holidays for all ages. It is well known for itʼs night life, but it has also another personality, extremely charming. The village of the island with the traditional Cycladic houses and the small streets, first glance tells the visitor the history of the place and its persons. It allocates beaches of unique beauty, golden and sandy, with crystal waters. They have been many times included in the list with “The 10 better beaches in Europe”.
During your stay in the island you have the option of several activities, depending on the type of tourism you prefer.
- Archaeological tourism:
Ios has many regions of archaeological interest, as Skarkos (Settlement of the first Cycladic period in Ios, dated between 2.800 - 2.700 B.C.), the ancient wall of the village, the Roman aqueduct in Saint Theodoti, the Byzantine castle of Palaiokastro in Psathi, the “Ellinika” in the Upper Valley, Homers grave in Plakoto, that claims the burial of Omiros. Do not forget to visit the archaeological museum in the village
- Rural tourism:
If you have an interest to know the local society and the Cycladic nature you should get familiarized with the agro-touristic activities of the island, as the production of honey made of thyme of amazing quality (in the summer), the gathering of olives (in the fall) and you can follow the flocks of kids that exist in the island.
- Religious tourism:
Ios like all the other islands of Cyclades, has many small semi private churches, they are estimated to be three hundred sixty five. Many of them, dated from the byzantine years, have been characterized as historical monuments. The hotel has hosted drawing lessons of students who were drawing Byzantine pictures in Ios churches.
- Peripatetic tourism:

- Marine tourism:
Ios has many sandy beaches. Some of the most well known beaches of the island are Mylopotas, with its crystal waters and Manganari, with its five beautiful bays- beaches. Many other beaches of astonishing beauty wait for you to explore him. Indicatively we report: Gialos, Koumbara, Tzamaria, Kolitsani, Saint Theodoti, Psathi, Kalamos, Plakes, Remataki of Pappa, Pikri Nero, Balmas, Klima, Sapounochoma, Kampaki, Plakotos, Petalidi, Neraki, Diamoydia. In the most organised beaches, of Gialos, Mylopotas, Manganari, you have water sports facilities, as canoe, windsurfing, water bicycle, tubes, water ski.
- Cultural tourism:
In the near future in Ios we will have two new museums. “Yiannis Gaitis- Gabriela Simosi”, named after the famous painter and his wife and the other Jean- Marie Drot, private established by this art collector. The visitor can also watch during the summer festival Omireia, various cultural events organized by the municipality, like theatrical performances, concerts and art expeditions. The festival performances take place in the stone build theatre of Odysseus Elytis, with an amazing view in Mylopotas. One other unique occasion of direct contact with the locals and their traditions are the religious festivals, where you can share with them the tasty traditional foods they offer free of charge to everybody and have fun dancing the Greek way. Travelling in Ios
In Ios there is no airport, but daily coastal connections, with Athens, Santorini, Naxos, Paros and a lot of other islands as Mykonos, Crete, Siphnos, Milos etc. The fastest way to come in Ios from Athens is the high speed boat (3, 5 hours). Many foreign tourists take charter flights for Santorini and then a boat for Ios (40min). Another economic solution is the flight charter in Heraklion, Crete. From Ios you can arrange easily daily excursions to Santorini, Paros, Naxos. In order to visit Sikinos, Folegandros and Anafi you should organise your excursion in advance, because there arenʼt necessarily daily connections.
